Let Sleeping Dragons Lie – by Heather Bickel

I am ancient

My ancestors jagged cliff faces, massive boulders, and crystal caves

I lie dormant, a sleeping volcano

Aaaahhh, but wait…are you sure you want to start the bellows?

Embers thought long dead warm and glow red hot

Wisps of flame tumble like blowing leaves on every exhaled breath

Firelight dances ecstatically across metallic scales

Black claws sharp as glass, hard as diamonds, scrape the ground like nails on chalkboard

Muscles ripple and bulge, gathering strength in crouching, reptilian intensity

Leathery wings unfold and test the air

Gold eyes fix you in their gaze, paralyzing you, peeling back your skin to reveal your naked soul

The dragon is awake, now what will you do?
